During the cooler months of June through to mid September the little arial and acrobatic speedsters move onto the inshore bait grounds only an hours run from Cairns marlin Marina.They are a very fast growing billfish and the marlin are found around the 10 to 60 kilos in weight and make for great sport fishing on 4 to 10 kilo line class.To target the black marlin they can be caught using conventional skip and swim baits,trolling a selected spread of lures to switch bait and also teasing up for targeting on fly tackle.All round they a great fun fish especially for introducing a keen young angler to the sport of light tackle billfish.

An absolute line burner on the reel and great fun species for everyone to catch inside and off the Great Barrier Reef.Spanish mackerel are found from NSW up the east Coast of Queensland, across the top of Australia and down the west coast and grow to over 60kg’s in weight, but the better eating size is up to 10kg’s as they are prone in the larger size fish to carry ciguatera in these pelagic’s species.The Spanish Mackerel are found all year round but more prevalent in numbers during the winter months and are caught trolling deep diving lures,jigging along the drop offs and deep trolling dead baits or live baits.

The Sailfish is regarded as the fastest fish that swims in the worlds oceans,and is one of the most stunning of the billfish species and most visual in its attacking teasers and baits.During the winter months a slightly smaller class of sails 20 to 35kg’s are found on the grounds off Cairns,June to mid September and then from end of November through to February see the bigger fish up to 80kg’s on the outside edge of the Great Barrier reef during spawning period.Great fishing fish on 10 to 15kg line class and very acrobatic sport fish.Again another great billfish for people getting into sports fishing.
